I had plenty of mentors along the way. My family owns a construction company. I grew up going to job sites as a kid, helped my dad with projects, and even started acquiring my own tool collection at a young age. I thought (incorrectly) that I had to carve out my own place, go my own way. It wasn't until I got a degree and years of experience in a different industry (computer science) that I realized how much I loved building and fixing things. Now I'm slowly working my way into the construction industry. Now I can lean on the knowledge from my mentors and past experience to work through school easier. There are a ton of students in my cohort that have little or no experience and schooling has been difficult for them. My recommendation is to get your hands dirty and learn from those whose hands may have years worth of dirt under the nails.
